historic VS historical
historic vs historical の記事に TigerさんとKABUさんが調べてコメントをくれました。
う〜ん、historical も 歴史的に重要な という場合でも使うようですね。
historic は「歴史的に重要な」

だけど、 historical は「歴史的に重要な」の意味でも使うことがある。

のような、あれ？ historic の間違いじゃないの？と思いましたが、そのときに、
日本語の「〜的」という言葉は、単に「〜に関する」という意味だけではなく「〜に関して重要な」という意味に使われているんだと思いました。
そうすると、日本語は「歴史上の」と「歴史的（に重要）な」を使い分けて、重要性を区別している。
だけど、英語はここがごっちゃになってきて、「歴史」というイメージが膨らんで、historicalに「歴史的に重要な」という語感が育ってきたのかも・・・。

調べてみました。というか、googleで用例を眺めたのと、英語のネーティブスピーカーの部下の方々にディスカッシュしてもらいました。
・もちろん、historicalとhistricのコアの意味に着目する限り、ohioさんのこの記事は正しい。つまり、「歴史的に（今後も記憶されるべき）事件だよ、これは」と言いたいときにhistoricalを使えば「これは歴史学に関する事件だ」の意味になりかねないということ。
・また、「history」自体には「凄いこと／やばいすよ、これ」以外に「つまらないこと」「皆が知っている情報価値の低いこと」というネガティブな語感もあり、historicalはその語感をも引きずっている。
ただ、これらを承知で、It's (a) historical (affair)! が（非文でなににせよ）違和感があるかと言われればそうではない。それは、historicalには「歴史の教科書にのるような大事件」という語感もあるから。
例えば、「静岡県藤枝市で縄文時代の製鉄工場プラント跡（推定、粗鉄生産能力日産1万トン）発見！」の出来事はhistoricalでありhistricでもあり、結局、historicalでよい。
とまあ、こんな所ではないでしょうか。これが上でTIGERさんが提示されたdictionaryの説明の背景かも。もっとも、くどいですが、ohioさんの記事が（正書法からは断然）正しいことは動かないのですけれども。

ところで、ＴＶでインタビューを受けていたアメリカ人が
"It's historical!!"と叫んでいたので、あれ〜？？と思いました。
historical は 「歴史の」 historic は「歴史にのこる、歴史上有名な」 だったはずなのに、
わたしの覚え違いだったかしらん。と調べてみたら、やっぱりここは historic が正しくて、historical と historic はネイティブでも間違えるらしい。
とはいえ、英辞郎の例をみると、historic と historical では同じようにつかえる場合もあるらしい。

でも、あのインタビューされた人達の興奮した様子は、historical / historic のどちらを使っていようと、「歴史的快挙だ！」と伝わってくるものがありました。

ただいま２回目をみています。( ^_^; )
以下 ちょっとネタバレあり。

今回も泣いたり笑ったり面白かったです〜。
でも、シーズン途中で脚本家のストがあったため、このシーズンは全１７話しかない。
今回は、リネットの夫トムが良かった〜。
ブリーの娘、ダニエルも良かった〜。
トムとノラの子、ケイラもあの年で憎まれ役を演じきっていて、よかった〜。
アメリカのドラマにでてくる俳優はみんな演技が上手いな〜。
ところで、日本でのシーズン４の放映は未定だそうです。早く放送してほしいですねえ。

でも、“デスパレートな妻たち”あたりで文句をいっていたら、「プリズンブレイク」とか「ロスト」なんて、見れませんよ、あなた。
「ヒーローズ」は一応話が終結するんだけど、うちのかれもわたしもあきれかえる終わり方でした。シーズン２をみるのが怖いです。
I have recently finished watching “Desperate Housewives – Season 4”, which I had bought in the U.S. Now I ma watching it second time around.
The following contains a bit of spoiler.
I enjoyed watching this season, too. I laughed and cried.
But this season has only 17 episodes, because in the middle of it there was a strike by the screenwriters.
This season Lynette’s husband Tom’s acting was very good.
Bree’s daughter Danielle’s was good, too.
Tom and Nora’s daughter, Kayla, was also good; I was amazed that the actor playing Kayla did a very good job at her age as a bad character.
All the actors in American dramas are really good; it’s amazing.
By the way, the broadcast of season 4 in Japan has not yet been scheduled, I heard.
I hope it will soon!
Incidentally, on the NHK’s website of “Desperate Housewives”, there was this notice.

I guess NHK had their share of complaints from their viewers.
The fourth season also has a surprising ending in the last 5 seconds.
But if you complain it in “Desperate Housewives”, you can never watch “Prison Break” or “Lost”.
“Heroes” had a better conclusive ending, but it was one that made both my husband and I roll our eyes in disbelief. I am afraid of watching its second season.

オハイオ / ヤードセール・クリスピークリームドーナッツ
On our way from Amish Country to Columbus, we found a yard sale on route 36 and dropped in.
The scenery along route 36 is very beautiful. The church in the picture I’m using by place of an avatar is on the route.
But there are so many roadkills on the road; my sister started counting the number and the count went up to 30 something for a one-hour drive. Most of them are raccoons, but this time I saw a small deer!

３６号線の景色はとても美しい。アバター代わりに使っている写真の教会も３６号線沿いにあったもの。
でも、３６号線上にはたくさんの動物が死んでます。ついに姉は途中から数え始め、一時間のドライブ中３０いくつまで行きました。たいていはラクーンだけど、今回は小さな鹿も発見！

Oiiiiiiiinnnnkkkkkk! So many doughnuts I had been yearning for were glowing!
I chose 8 doughnuts. The clerk said the price would be the same even if I would buy 4 more doughnuts. Of course I took the advice. The price was less than 7 dollars for 1 dozen.
Furthermore, I got a discount coupon! Oink!
With the coupon, they would sell a dozen of original glazed doughnuts at the half price with a purchase of a dozen of any doughnuts. Oink, Oink!
But my stay in Columbus area is only for two days …..
Buuuuuut! We dropped in the store two days later on our way to the airport and got 2 dozens of the doughnuts at about 10 dollars!
Those have definitely made me into a piggy. Oiiiiinnnnkkkkk! ( ^_^; )

アーミッシュキルト （パッチワーク）
There are many quilt shops in Amish Country.
I don't sew, so me in a quilt shop is like a pig with pearls.
My sister is a quilter so we visited most of the quilt shops.

They built barns together. They quilt together.
They reminded me of the word, "quilting bee".

One of the shops has a small quilt museum and they show some Amish quilters working on a quilt. I wish we were allowed to take pictures of Amish ladies there.

アーミッシュの少女
アーミッシュの学校は１年から８年までしかないので１４歳から働き始めます。
道端でかごをうっているアーミッシュらしき人がいたので、かごはかさ張って持って帰れないから買えないけどなあ、と思いつつちょっと見てみることにしました。
売っていたのは１４歳のアーミッシュの少女でした。

１４歳の少女が幼い兄弟の面倒を見ながら道端でバスケットを売っているとは。
純粋な瞳がとても印象的なアーミッシュの少女でした。
アーミッシュの人はアーミッシュではない人と交流するのを避けているのかと思ってたけど、今回人里離れたところをまわってくれる２時間のツアーに参加したら、向こうから手を振ってくれるアーミッシュの人たち、特に子供たちが多くて、案外友好的な人達なんだな、と思いました。
アーミッシュカントリーは大きな道路からの眺めもすごくきれいなので、わざわざツアーに参加しなくても・・と思ったのですが、もっと美しい場所に連れて行ってくれました。アーミッシュカントリーに言ったら、このツアーは必見です。ひとり２９ドル。
この２時間のツアー後、アーミッシュのお宅で夕食を食べるコースもあって、それに参加したかったけど、人数が集まらなかったとかでできませんでした。

We saw someone who looked like Amish selling baskets on a roadside, so we pulled over and took a look, though baskets were bulky so that we didn’t want to buy them. The vender was a 14-year-old Amish girl.

Me : We are from Japan.
The Amish girl : How far is it?
Me : Well, it takes about 11 – 12 hours to get to the U.S. by airplane.
The Amish girl : Airplanes goes faster than cars, right?
Me : (For a while, I lost words.) Yes.

I’ll remember her pure eyes for a long time.
I had thought Amish people did not want to have contact with non-Amish people before I visited there this time. But we joined a 2-hour tour which took us off-the-beaten paths and I was surprised that Amish people were very friendly, especially many children waved to us.

If you ever visit the area, you must join the tour. The admission is $29 per person.
There is a tour in which we have dinner at an Amish house after the two hour tour I joined. We wanted to join the tour with the dinner, but we couldn’t as there weren’t enough number of people.

アーミッシュというのは、１８世紀に宗教的迫害を逃れてアメリカにわたってきた人たちで、最初ペンシルバニアに住み着いたため、ペンシルバニアダッチと呼ばれているアーミッシュの方が有名だけど、人口はオハイオのアーミッシュの方がおおい。オハイオのアーミッシュの人口は、４５，０００〜５０，０００くらいとガイドの人が言ってました。

アーミッシュの人にとって日曜日は休息日なので、日曜日よりも平日のほうが馬車をよく見れるそうです。それに、お店も日曜日はお休みが多くて、訪れる際は気をつけてください。

As Sunday is the rest day, I heard we see more buggies on weekdays. And many of the stores in the area are closed on Sundays. If you ever plan to visit there, you need to keep that in mind.

On coming home from American, I got on the scale. Wowwwwwww! My eyes! My eyes! (From Phebe's line in "Friends". If you understand, you understand.) The scale indicated a figure I had never seen before.......
But, buuuuuuut, Japanese food is so so so good.... how can it be so tasty..... it's impossible to go on a diet...
I have been impressed by Japanese food every time I eat.... but I have lost some weight, well as much as 600 gram. Way to go, Japanese food!

It takes about six or seven hours to drive from Niagara Falls region to Ohio Amish Country.
I didn't want to drive so long, so we stayed in a small town in Northernmost Ohio, Ashutabula.
Since we had left New York, the view along I90 is almost the same as shown in the picture for two or three hours. My sister and I took turns behind the wheel.

We stayed too long on the American side of Niagara Falls and left there around two or three, so we got to Ashtabula around 6:30 and we visited only one covered bridge.

It had a small fridge and a microwave oven. Motels comes in handy for budget travellers.

Ashtabulaを選んだのは、屋根つきの橋が１０個くらいあると知ったからです。
ナイアガラのアメリカ側に長居しすぎたため、出発したのが午後２−３時。ついたのが６時半ころで、一つしかいけませんでした。

小さな冷蔵庫と電子レンジがついてたので、安く旅行したい人にはモーテルはやっぱり便利だなと思いました。
