The Deftoned-tan Cometh

Holy shnikies! I’ve received the chibi-tan treatment despite TSB being AWOL for (deep breath) a whole month now.

From 53rg10:

This was more challenging than the others. This tan is based on deftoned and his blog Tea Shop BeLoved. I knew that I had to make a maid outta Tea Shop BeLoved because…well, it’s a tea shop!! That wasn’t the challenging part. The challenging part was trying to make the tan look confident because deftoned always knows what he’s talking about and he can back up what he says with examples. I’m not sure if I got that ‘confidence’ down…

The “confidence” looks great. When I was still a wee psychology undergraduate research assistant I worked on a study that examined pride and its facial/bodily expression, and the hands on the hips, upward chin, and thrusted chest are stop on. Triple thumbs up there 53rg10. Deftoned-tan looks pretty damn good, though there were 2 things I would have loved to have seen in there:

(1) Glasses. I wear glasses… and what better way to symbolize “knows wh he’s talking about and he can back up what he says with example” than with the ultra mark of being a bookworm?

(2) Bardiche or any other sort of melee weapon. Why? Because they look cool. Don’t believe it? Look at Nanoha or Chaos;Head.

Nevertheless, deftoned-tan looks lovely. I do hope she’s dojikko deftoned-tan though.

Happy Birthday Tea Shop BeLoved

I want some cake and ice cream.

Two years ago today, I was sitting around piecing together ancient blog entries I had written in various places and cleaning up the litter that was my original anime blog, Ramble, Ramble. Thanks to my desire to not think about working on my Master’s Thesis and my hunger to rattle off nonsense about anime and related topics, Tea Shop BeLoved was born. Plenty of ups, downs, and zigzags over the last couple years, but it has been fun. Here’s to more randomness!

P.S.: My quasi-hiatus should finally be ending next weekend or very soon after.

First Aria the Natural DVDs out in January

Here at Tea Shop BeLoved, any Aria news is good news.

Right Stuf to Launch Aria the Natural Anime in January

First of two DVD sets for sequel to Aria the Animation television series

The North American anime distributor Right Stuf and its Nozomi Entertainment production arm have announced that they will release the first of two DVD sets for the Aria the Natural television anime series on January 27, 2009. The series continues the anime adaptation of Kozue Amano’s acclaimed future slice-of-life manga about Akari, a girl training to be a gondolier on a canal-filled planet. Each DVD set will contain 13 episodes. Director Junichi Sato (Princess Tutu, Kaleido Star, Sailor Moon/Sailor Moon R) and the studio Hal Film Maker (Boys Be…, Pretear, Slayers Premium, Sketchbook ~full color’S~) animated four different Aria projects. Right Stuf already shipped the first Aria anime series, Aria the Animation, last month.

Just 2 weeks since Right Stuf released the Aria the Animation DVDs, they announce the first half of Aria the Natural. At the rate that they’re going at, it wouldn’t be far fetched to see Aria the Origination out on DVD in North America in about a year.

Now only if Tokyopop could crank out the manga at a quicker pace…

Ga-Rei Zero… huh?

I guess we all need a Pocky-eating and sword-wielding bishoujo in our lives.

Okay, okay, okay… what the hell just happened? Episode 1, the cast dies. Episode 2, most of the cast dies. Or they all supposedly die. Is this how this is all going to play out? If so, alright cool. Yes, it’s still too early to pass judgment, but at the moment, I’m  watching Gai-Rei Zero out of curiosity. The story premise seems interesting and the characters (at least when they had a pulse) were likable. However, I’m not sure how long the novelty will last or if this series presents something worth clinging to. Off the top of my head, the only other series that had the cast killed off in less than 3 episodes was Kiss Dumb - Engage Planet. Never finished that one. Never wanted to finish that one. I hope Ga-Rei Zero does better; if anything because I enjoy Chihara Minori and Kitamura Eri.

Ohara Sayaka we need you!

Mami-chan had such promise, until she sported the Metroid look.

Girls named Natsuki who use dual pistols and a motorcycle are fine too.

Joshikousei Sanae-san

It’s all sorts of wrong, yet all sorts of WIN and AWESOME.

Sanae not only in full seifuku, but glasses too. It’s like 2 scoops of ice cream or getting extra change from a vending machine.

All sorts of wrong in the moral sense of things… But then tossing in some Sanae cosplay (albeit very short) was an added bonus.

Nagisa’s alternate look? All sorts of awesome. Heavenly rays, angels, blaring trumpets, and puffy clouds sorts of awesome. Need more of the hair clip from Nagisa most definitely.

Welcome back Gundam 00

When anime actually gives you a hard on.

Now that Geass finally done and over with, we can get back to more important matters. Gundam 00 that is. Four years of built up angst and sadness all ready to explode… not to mention 4 years of growing up. Those 4 years have been incredibly kind of the characters, especially the female ones. No complaints from me whatsoever. Welcome back Gundam 00. I’ve missed you!

Feldt got hotter. Oh, so hotter.

Louise got a prosthesis, a mobile suit, and some Tic Tacs.

Shirin got implants a new job.

Holy crap, Soma got exponentially hotter!

Saji’s got a gun… “Run away, run away from that pain…”

Wang Liu Mei… B^D~

Tiera got a twin “sister.”

Marina didn’t get what she wanted for her birthday.

Sumeragi got drunk.

Allelujah/Hallelujah got a new cut and color from Super Cuts.

“Lockon Stratos” got some of that Revive potion.

Setsuna got a new toy.

DISCOTHEQUE + a dancing vampire

I hope that sequence sticks as the OP.

Gonzo better not pull that crap they did during the first season where both the OP and ED sequences were changed in the middle of the series. Both changes were ultimately for the better, but the sequence they had for DISCOTHEQUE was pretty damn awesome. Hopefully things were done right the first time this time. Instead of the “obviously choreographed for anime” dance moves from Hare Hare Yukai and others, DISCOTHEQUE actually looks realistic and choreographed for someone to actually perform. I honestly can see someone (read: Mizuki Nana) performing them live and fluidly. Clarification… I want to see someone (again read: Mizuki Nana) performing that, preferably with Moka’s outfit as well. Ahem…

I’ve been slowly warming up to DISCOTHEQUE over the last couple days. I wasn’t too impressed with either DISCOTHEQUE or Trinity Cross on my first listen, but having listened to them a bit more, they’re starting to stick. I actually like Trickster best out of the 3 tracks. I guess my expectations were raised high because I took a major liking to Dancing in the velvet moon from the STARCAMP EP (and Rosario + Vampire’s ED).

A few words on Strike Witches

The show that has nearly everything a healthy male could want.

I’ve put a handful of final episodes on hold to watch Strike Witches. Why? No clue…I am not sure what to think of Strike Witches really. It’s enjoyable, yes, but not even close to something worth watching more than once. It’s a series that is bad need of a sequel (anyone can tell it needs more, even if I haven’t seen it all) and defogged/uncensored DVD releases. It’s like Sky Girls Light, but better than said series in ways. It’s hard not to draw comparisons between the two series (bishoujo at war, large alien attackers, and an overload of military and moe), and at the moment, I’d give the nod to Sky Girls for actually having a story thought out and implemented throughout. However, I find myself liking Strike Witches more, simply because the characters are much cuter more interesting and Strikers are much better looking than Sonic Divers. How this series wraps things up in the remaining 3 episodes will probably determine my sentiment towards this series.

After 9 episode, I’m glad something (plotwise) is happening. I was wondering whether or not this series was just going to be a moe-fest and pantsu-fest all 12 episodes. Considering that I managed to get through this many episodes running on nothing but Lynette, Erica, and Sanya goodness, I wasn’t expecting much of anything. I was already used to no major story, bloomer love, and throaty Chiba Saeko laughter. The fact that some sort of story has materialized is pretty much bonus material at this point. We’ll see how things pan out.

But on to more important dealings… Character rankings Hawtness list, based on absolutely nothing intellectual, mid-provoking, or evidence-based. Yep, the eye patch does nothing for me.

01. Lynette Bishop
02. Erica Hartmann (tied for second)
02. Sanya V. Litvyak (tied for second)
04. Gertruid Barkhorn
05. Minna-Dietlinde Wilcke
06. Eila Ilmatar Juutilainen
07. Franesca Lucchini
08. Yoshika Miyafuji
09. Perrine H. Clostermann
10. Charolette E. Yeager
11. Mio Sakamoto

Moyashimon manga licensed

Getting brewed all over again.

Moyashimon was one of the better surprises to come out of 2007, so it’s great to hear that the manga has been licensed by Del Rey. The 11 episodes that aired last year were quite entertaining, but I always felt like we got shortchanged. The characters and setting both felt loaded with potential, but it was over quickly. The characters had only just been introduced to us and we finally had a sense of who they were, but then that was it. I always felt like there is a lot more to characters such as Hazuki, Takuma, Kaoru, and Aoi, as well as with more prominant characters such as Kei, Haruka, and Tadayasu. But regardless of what has already been animated, more Moyashimon in any fashion is a very good thing in my opinion.

Del Rey Gets Moyashimon, Amefurashi, Maid War Chronicles

Source of Tales of Agriculture anime; manga from Venus Vs. Virus, Mao-chan creators

Del Rey Manga has announced at New York Anime Festival 2008 on Saturday that it acquired Masayuki Ishikawa’s Moyashimon, Atsushi Suzumi’s Amefurashi, and RAN’s Maid War Chronicles (Maid Senki) manga. The Moyashimon manga follows a college student who discovers that he can see and communicate with the germs all around him — germs that appear as super-deformed characters. Moyashimon won a Kodansha Manga Award for Best General Manga and the Manga Grand Prize in the 12th Annual Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prizes. The manga has been running in Kodansha’s Evening magazine since 2004.

Suzumi drew the Amefurashi action comedy in Kodansha’s Monthly Shōnen Sirius magazine from 2006 to 2007. The titular character is a mysterious rain goddess who lives in a desert and brings rain to a rural village. A boy named Gimy encounters the goddess, who turns out to be an unpredictable girl named Sora. In addition to Amefurashi, Suzumi created the Haridama Magical Cram School and Venus Versus Virus manga — the latter of which was adapted into anime.

Maid War Chronicles also runs in Monthly Shōnen Sirius magazine. The comical war fantasy story revolves around maids who protect a prince after the imperial guard knights have been annihilated. Three volumes have been published since 2007. RAN also drew the Mao-chan manga, which is based on the 2002 animated television series.
